Frazer McNaughton on Why Compliance Shouldn’t Slow Innovation

As regulatory requirements increase across iGaming, operators need to balance compliance with the need to keep developing their products, entering new markets and responding to changing player expectations.

In his latest article for iGaming News, Betable Director of Compliance Frazer McNaughton looks at why those priorities don’t need to work against each other.

“The real challenge isn’t regulation itself. It is whether the technology supporting an operator can manage regulatory complexity without making every change slow, expensive or technically difficult.”

Compliance becomes harder to manage when areas such as KYC, safer gambling, reporting and market-specific requirements sit across disconnected systems. Building them into the underlying platform architecture can give operators a more flexible foundation as regulations and business requirements change.

That becomes particularly important for businesses operating across multiple jurisdictions, where products, payments, promotions and player controls may need to be configured differently from one market to another.

“The goal isn’t simply to be compliant. It is to build a platform that can remain compliant as the business changes.”

Flexibility can also give operators greater control over the technologies and providers they use. With the right architecture, new components can be introduced while appropriate compliance controls remain in place across the wider platform.

Speed matters here too. Operators need to respond quickly when regulations change, while maintaining the oversight required in a regulated industry. Automation and unified data can reduce unnecessary manual work and give compliance teams more time to focus on the areas where their expertise matters most.

Ultimately, innovation and compliance should be considered together from the beginning rather than treating regulation as something to address once a new product or technology has already been developed.

“Compliance and innovation shouldn’t be competing priorities.”
